Too cool for school. Or is it too young?
What I’ve Been Reading
The Sequence. Yup, it’s that time. Time to remind myself what I’m capable of. Why this book won multiple awards. A confidence boost in my own ability and a reminder of what these characters were up to before the events of False Ignition.
A quote:
“We need tickets to Hong Kong. Something private, away from other passengers, something easy,” he said. This job had become anything but.
“Everything is easier with money, my friend,” the Somali said.
“Money is something we have,” Dallas replied, removing the roll of Bank of China notes from his ankle wrap.
“Then easy is something you have, ajnabi.”
I’m also at 53% of Children of Dune. By all accounts a true slog of a read, like a real door stopper if you know what I mean. But it keeps me coming back. Not a book I could sit and read for hours, but in thirty minute chunks it’s a daily reader that is just going to take a month to finish.
What I’ve been watching
Alien: Romulus
Listen. I’m a HUGE fan of the original Alien and Aliens movies that, in my opinion created the space horror genre. Alien by itself may be my favourite movie of all time. Like the xenomorph, an H.R.Geiger creation, perfect in every way, including its blend of genres. Unbeatable, and fucking terrifying. The return of Ash (or at least a reasonable facsimile) from the original is very well done. Like proper creepy. I turned the lights back on midway through the show.
Is it a rehash of the first two movies with a touch of YA flair? Absolutely, 100%. The protagonist climbing into a spacesuit—seriously, come on. But credit where it’s due: the things it does well really shine, and I had an absolute blast watching it.
What I’ve Been Playing
Hockey. Like the real kind, on ice. Goaltending to be specific. Snagged a shutout in my first return to league play since before Covid with a couple of buds from work on their team, Big Fish. We crushed the other team 9-0 but a shutty is a shutty. Can’t wait to play for them again. And skiing! Finally back on the mountain in Whistler during what I would say is one of the top three opening days of my life. That’s 35 years of skiing. Been a great few days up there so far, and the highlight was getting to ski with my wife on her brand new board, the first of her life.
Question of the week.
So has the air fryer taken the place of the microwave? Why would I use a device that requires it be contained inside a faraday cage when I can air fryer literally everything into perfection in minutes?
What I’ve Been Up To.
I took Declan for a quick trip to Ontario to surprise his grandpa (we call him Papa Ian–by request) on his 78th birthday. The trip coincided with his 30th flight. Not record setting but no joke for a kid of 19 months.
More completed chapters of False Ignition are in the can and I think I’ve solved the tropey-ending with something that pops without the groan. I’m looking forward to handing over a complete manuscript to my beta readers at the end of the year.
All for now.
